The friction modifier allows the differential’s internal clutches to slip and engage properly, preventing chatter and extending the time between rebuilds.

The lack of friction modifier allows torsen units to function correctly without reducing their internal biasing capability. It can also increase lockup in clutch-type LSDs, but will accelerate clutch wear—so it’s only recommended when maximum lockup is the goal.
