Clutch Masters DCT Flywheels

Clutch Masters DCT Flywheels

We have to hand it to the engineers who developed a seven-speed transmission capable of shifting gears in as little as 50 milliseconds. When BMW introduced its dual-clutch transmission, or DCT, many purists were disappointed to lose the traditional H-pattern gearbox. Once more drivers experienced the speed, consistency, and performance of the DCT, however, many quickly came around.

One drawback of the factory BMW DCT system is its incredibly heavy dual-mass flywheel. Although the DCT does not use a conventional clutch, there was still significant room to reduce rotating mass and improve shift responsiveness.

We know that a properly dampened, sprung-hub design is essential to not damage the DCT clutch-basket. A rigid or non-dampened flywheel can transfer excessive engine vibrations and shock loads directly into the thin clutch basket, which fatigues and leads to failures of the front cover.

Clutch Masters combined its proven dampened clutch-disc technology with a heavy-duty sprung hub that mounts directly to the lightweight billet flywheel. The result is quicker engine response, faster shifts, and reduced rotating mass while maintaining the dampening required during hard, high-RPM shifts and normal stop-and-go street driving.

Spring-Pack Options

Standard 8-Spring Hub - The proven eight-spring configuration provides the necessary drivetrain dampening for high-performance and racing applications. Like many lightweight flywheel setups, some transmission rattle or gear noise may be noticeable at idle or low engine speeds.

10-Spring Billet Hub Upgrade - The new ten-spring upgrade was developed for customers who want the performance of a lightweight flywheel without the typical lightweight-flywheel noise.

This upgraded hub features ten dampening springs housed inside a greased billet spring enclosure. The enclosed and lubricated design keeps the springs controlled, dramatically reduces NVH, and creates a more OEM experience.

For high-powered street cars, restomods, and premium builds where refinement matters, the ten-spring upgrade offers the best combination of strength, response, and comfort.
