Gen1 BMW Manual Park Release

A very trick new product from Guru Autowerks. This Manual Park Release Kit is for all BMW GEN1 8HP45, 8HP70, and 8HP90 transmissions that use the aweful jam screw style stock override.

Instructions are available [HERE]

The handle allows you to pull the mechanisms cable to manually disengage the parking pawl. This is useful for towing, trailer loading, and moving cars with their engine off.

Low profile cable bracket mounts to the left side of the oil pan flange. Three-foot long cable allows the  compact manual release mechanism to be mounted remotely.

Compatibility
BMW GEN1 8HP45, 8HP70, and 8HP90

  • Install Instructions

    1. Install main body of"L" Lever Arm behind the existing BMW Lever arm. Locate "Cap" on front side, start 4 socket cap screws b hand, pull up evenly until snug then Torque these M3 cap screws to 7-10 in lbs.

    2. Remove (2) Oil Pan Bolts at the location shown in product pictures using appropriate sized T40 Torx.

    3. Install "K" Manual Park Release Cable Bracket. Using provided M6 Hex Bolts, install the bolts from the TOP side of the oil pan flange. Notice the slotted bolt holes in the bracket, push the bracket all the way forward towards front of the transmission. Note "K" bracket mounting holes will be offset closer to the transmission case and orientation of bracket will only install one direction correctly (reference product picture).

    4. Torque these M6 Hex Bolts to 7.5 ft-lb leaving from the top side, now securing the "K" bracket to the oil pan flange. While holding backup on the M6 Hex bolts, install washer, lock washer then nylok nut to these hex bolts to secure the oil pan and torque to 7.5 ft-lb.

    5. Loosen M5 socket cap screw at the top of "K" bracket. Route cable end through the "K" manual park bracket "Eye". Rotate the cable end until the "U Shaped" slot of the cable cable collar end is oriented at the 12 o clock position and then tighten M5 socket cap screw.

    6. After mounting "M" Mechanism to the desired location route "ball" end of the cable to the inside of the vehicle through an existing or new hole.

    7. Install cable end through the hole of "M" mechanism round hole until both tabs of the retainer end collar are secured into the mechanism hole.

    8. Route "ball" end of the cable through the "M" mechanisms handle slot, and secure it into the recessed groove. Pulling cable ball end or compressing the opposite end of the cable where it attaches to the "L" Arm will allow slack to make this process easier.

    9. Lastly attach the female plastic cable end over the male pivot point/tip of the "L" bracket, press firmly until the female end, clicks and is secure.

    10. Verify actuation/functionality of the system. Note: The "M" Mechanism pivot arm should be pulled upwards when placing the transmission in neutral (unlocking the parking pawl). Do NOT pull the Red" loop as the force required to pull upwards can break the loop and the spring loaded locking pin will not be able to lock into place until after the loop is released. The "Red" loop is purely used for unlocking the spring loaded locking pin of the handle in order to lower the mechanism pivot arm downward to place the transmission back into park (re-engaging the parking pawl). If needed you can loosen oil pan bolts holding "K" bracket and slide the bracket rearward to remove cable slack then lock back in place. This is usually not necessary. Moving too far rearward could cause the lever arm mechanism to rotate enough to engage the locking pin, leaving slack is ok as long as the parking pawl is disengaged when mechanism arm is locked in the upright position.
